The arrest comes days after another joint intelligence-led operation by the unit led to the arrest of another drug trafficker Salim Kilanga Mwinyi in Magongo, Kisauni Sub-county.

Security officers in Mombasa on Wednesday nabbed another suspected drug trafficker in the Kiembeni area, Mombasa.

The morning sting operation led by detectives drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit saw the arrest of Mohamed Ali alias Said Hamisi Rashid Zeddy.

The arrest comes days after another joint intelligence-led operation by the unit led to the arrest of another drug trafficker Salim Kilanga Mwinyi in Magongo, Kisauni Sub-county.

Police reports indicated Zeddy was in possession of approximately 200g of heroin, several sachets of cocaine, prescription pills, bhang, assorted packaging materials and a weighing scale in his house.

“The detectives who seem to be very precise while planning the surprise attacks got the suspect inside his house while he was preparing to start his daily routine to distribute the drugs around the drug dens and inside a popular nightclub in Nyali frequented by mostly foreigners,” the report seen by The Eastleigh Voice stated.

The detectives disclosed that despite the shortage of heroin supplies in the country due to strict security measures put across the region, drug dealers have now reverted to the sale of prescription pills that are laced with hard drugs to sustain the market demand.

Fight against drug trafficking

The security agents have vowed not to relent in the fight against drug trafficking especially in the Coast region which is hard hit.

“We are narrowing down on Nigerian suppliers based in Nairobi who are supplying the distribution networks with cocaine through the Kenya-Uganda border,” a senior detective who sought anonymity disclosed.

According to detectives, the fight against drugs and alcohol has recently seen the country review its narcotics laws and is now operating within harsh laws to fight drug trafficking.

Investigations by police have revealed most of the known dealers are choosing to relocate to neighbouring countries after the government showed no signs of relentlessness in this fight.

The suspect is being held at the Nyali Police Station and shall be arraigned in court within 24 hours.

On Monday, Mombasa Court allowed police to continue to detain suspected notorious drug dealer Salim Kilanga.

The police had sought three days to weigh and sample the heroin he was nabbed with.

The court granted the detention request and said the case would be mentioned on April 18, 2024, for further directions to be issued.
