South Sudan Cabinet approves public-private partnership policy, IGAD treaty

South Sudan’s national Cabinet has approved a new public-private partnership policy to spur economic growth.

Jacob Maiju, the Deputy Minister for Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, stated that the policy, presented by his investment colleague, Dhieu Mathok Ding, would create an enabling environment for promoting public-private partnerships.

Addressing reporters shortly after a Cabinet meeting last Friday, Maiju added that the policy was designed to achieve socio-economic development and ensure sustainable funding for infrastructure projects.

He emphasised that it was debated and unanimously passed by the Council of Ministers.

The deputy minister also announced that the Cabinet approved a memo on the treaty for establishing the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

According to South Sudan’s Radio Tamazuj, the memo was presented by the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Justice Ruben Madol Arol.

This new treaty will replace the IGAD agreement to enhance regional cooperation for sustainable development.

In another development, the Cabinet appealed to the Lakes and Unity states to refrain from revenge attacks.

The deputy minister reported that the Cabinet had listened to a presentation from the Vice President of the Infrastructure Cluster, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, about a looming revenge attack following recent cattle raids between Lakes and Unity states.

The Cabinet had received reports of youths mobilising for revenge and urged the respective governors to work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

"Taban Deng Gai, Chairperson of the Infrastructure Cluster, raised issues of cattle raiding between Lakes and Unity states. The council urged the two governors to contain the situation and seek peaceful solutions," Korok said.

A raid by suspected rustlers from Unity State occurred two weeks ago in Lakes State, and there were reports of youth mobilising in Lakes State with the intent to exact revenge.
