Flood victims in Nairobi's California and Pumwani wards receive aid

By |

Among the supplies that were distributed to the affected people were maize flour, cooking oil, bar soaps, cereals including rice, green grams, and beans.

Over 200 people affected by the ongoing floods in Nairobi's Kamukunji sub-county have started receiving aid.

Action Aid International Kenya in partnership with Youth Alive! Kenya and the Community-led Disaster Management Committee in Kamunkunji came together on Friday to distribute crucial food donations during this difficult period.

The targetted people residing from Pumwani and California wards within the Kamukunji sub-county received the items at the California social hall.

Among the supplies that were distributed to the affected people were maize flour, cooking oil, bar soaps, cereals including rice, green grams, and beans.

Victoria Nyokabi from Youth Alive! Kenya said they were also distributing personal hygiene items such as bar soaps and sanitary towels.

"We are supporting them so that they can at least have food amidst the disaster. I hope this will go a long way to support the affected families," she said.

Andreas Schulz from Action Aid International Kenya said he was impressed by how young people stood together during such times.

California MCA Hashim Kamau assured the affected residents that more aid would be coming

He urged the residents to heed the government's mitigative measures against the ongoing heavy rains and floods.

"As you have been told and heard the rains are expected to continue. Kindly listen to the directives and any measures given to secure your lives," Kamau added.

According to the latest update by the government as of May 3, 2024 morning, the number of displaced households due to the floods is 33,100, affecting approximately 165,500 people.

In total, at least 196,296 people have been impacted by the heavy rains.

Kenyans who have died from the ongoing nationwide floods rose to 210.

Nairobi County is the worst hit with 147,031 people displaced accounting for over 77 percent of those displaced countrywide.

According to City Hall, out of the households affected by the floods, 13,000 had sought refuge in the camps set up by the county government.

However, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the number was decreasing.

Sakaja noted that out of the 31 camps that had been established, only 10, which are situated in Mathare and Ruaraka sub-counties are currently occupied.
