One killed as suspected Al-Shabaab militants torch two vehicles in Lamu

The latest attack has raised concerns about whether insecurity in Lamu is slowly resurfacing with residents fleeing for safety.

One person died and two others were injured after two vehicles were torched on Tuesday evening by suspected Al-Shabaab militants at Milihoi in Lamu County.

The security agents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the suspected terrorists targeted a truck and a pickup in Milhoi near the Bagdam Bridge.

Last month, the killing of two national police reserves (NPR) in the village of Ziwa La Taa, Witu, in Lamu County revived memories of previous attacks in the area.

The two were killed on Saturday, March 23, 2024, and their colleague was seriously injured in the leg when suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked the village at night.

The area, which for some time now, has been witnessing an abundance of peace and tranquilly, also saw houses and several motorcycles destroyed by the suspected militia group, who also stole food and other household items before disappearing into the Boni forest.

Ziwa La Taa is among over 20 villages in Lamu that have witnessed killings and property destruction following attacks by Al-Shabaab.

Other villages with a grim history include Juhudi, Salama, Widho, Marafa, Mashogoni, Kaisari, Ukumbi, and Nyatha. The list also includes Poromoko, Mavuno Nyongoro, Mambo Sasa, Milihoi, and Lion's Gate, among others.
