Last year, Uganda ended its deal with Kenya, which imported oil on behalf of its neighbouring country. President Yoweri Museveni, in a statement dated November 2023, accused Kenyan oil marketers and middlemen of charging exorbitant fees.
Before the deal was reached, Uganda had been seeking other ways of importing petroleum products, including through a Tanzanian port, after its oil retailers for decades received their cargo through affiliated firms in Kenya.
The feud between Kenya and Uganda had escalated to the regional court, with Uganda seeking a licence to utilise KPC's infrastructure.
