Nairobi, surrounding counties bracing for heavy rains as weatherman issues warning

Residents of Nairobi and surrounding counties have been warned to expect moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The weatherman has warned that some parts of Nairobi will experience rainfall of up to 100 mm, with Westlands expected to be the worst hit.

According to the prediction, Embakasi East will receive rainfall of up to 20 mm, while Roysambu will experience rainfall of up to 35 mm.

Dagoretti North will receive rainfall of up to 80mm, and Kibra will receive rain of up to 60mm. Other parts of the Nairobi metropolitan region will also experience moderate-to-heavy rainfall.

In Kiambu County, Githunguri is expected to receive rainfall of up to 100 mm, while Kiambaa will receive rainfall of up to 80 mm. Limuru will experience rainfall of up to 60 mm, and Gatundu South will receive rainfall of up to 20 mm. Juja and Ruiru will receive rainfall of up to 10 mm.

In Machakos County, Mavoko will receive rainfall of up to 15 mm, while Kathiani will receive rainfall of up to 10 mm. Masinga will experience rainfall of up to 10 mm, and Machakos Town will receive rainfall of up to 5 mm.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier predicted that most parts of the country would be generally dry this week, but rainfall is expected over a few areas in the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley.

The weatherman has advised residents to prepare for the heavy rainfall, which may cause flooding and disrupt transportation. The weatherman has also warned of strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) over some parts of Kenya's coast, north-eastern, and north-western regions.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience sunny intervals in the morning, though a few areas may receive light rains. Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid travelling to areas that may be affected by flooding.
