Former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter allegedly abducted in Nairobi

Former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter has reportedly been abducted by unidentified individuals.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the moment when Keter was forcibly removed from his black Landcruiser V8 vehicle by three men and pushed into a KBE 256H double cab vehicle parked nearby as he screamed and tried to resist outside Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, June 30, 2024, Keter posted, “Abducted, headed to an unknown destination!”

Reports indicate that he was taken while on his way to church in Lavington, Nairobi.

Keter’s abduction follows recent statements in which he pledged to tour the country alongside other leaders to challenge what he described as the “lies and ambiguous promises” of the Kenya Kwanza government.

“I will traverse the entire country with my friend and Embakasi East MP Hon. Babu Owino to squabble and toss out all the lies and ambiguous promises made by this failed Kenya Kwanza government,” Keter noted in one of his recent posts on social media.

His abduction comes at a time when pressure is mounting on authorities to halt the abductions of Kenyans opposed to the government.

Since the start of the anti-finance bill 2024 protests, several social media influencers and activists have been abducted and later released, though the whereabouts of others remain unknown.

Notable cases include Alvina Wanjiru Gachugu, who was abducted last Thursday, along with Kelvin Kori alias Correy, Tony Paul, Kabatila Munyithya, and Daniel Omondi among others.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has filed a formal report with the Director of Criminal Investigation, urging an investigation into these abductions.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo has criticised the tactics used by security officers, calling them unconstitutional saying they target youths participating in protests.

"We emphasise our concerns over the draconian, unconstitutional tactics being deployed against Kenyan youth for exercising their democratic rights," Odhiambo said.

The High Court also issued an order directing the DPP, AG, DCI and NIS to immediately and unconditionally release all social media users allegedly abducted after expressing their dissatisfaction with the unpopular Finance Bill, 2024

Justice Chacha Mwita at the same time restrained the state from abducting vocal social media and political activist Gabriel Oguda and 12 others once released.
