Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a grisly accident at the Muguga Junction in Kikuyu on the Naivasha-Nairobi Highway on Saturday morning.

The accident involved an Eldoret Express bus which rammed into a stalled fuel tanker.

While confirming the accident, Kikuyu Police Commander Ronald Kirui said the bus, en route from Nakuru to Nairobi, lost control and hit the stationary tanker from behind.

“We had two fatalities and more than 10 were rushed to hospitals. We urge drivers to be careful as the roads are now slippery and wet due to the rains,” he said.

The injured passengers were taken to Kikuyu Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the two passengers were transported to Thogoto Hospital mortuary.

The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to Kikuyu Police Station.

The police commander stated that traffic police have initiated investigations to ascertain the cause of the fatal accident.

"As of now, we cannot tell what caused the accident, but our traffic officers have embarked on investigations," Kirui said.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam, forcing motorists who were heading towards Nairobi to use alternative routes in Muguga villages and rejoin the highway at Kinoo.

This is the latest accident amid an ongoing campaign to address the menace that has left over 1,000 people dead since January 2024.
