Outrage as Green Army team caught dumping garbage on Yusuf Haji Road

Nairobi County's Green Army, formed to tackle the city's garbage woes, has come under scrutiny after its members were captured on camera dumping garbage on Yusuf Haji Road.

Adding to the concern, another person, also donning the Green Army uniform, is seen repeatedly dumping garbage in the same location.

The spot of this illicit dumping is right opposite Hodan Plaza, where Waudo Street converges with Yusuf Haji Road. The garbage dumped by the Green Army has completely blocked one side of the lane, making motorists squeeze into the remaining lane.



Yusuf Haji Road starts at Jogoo Road and goes all the way to Juja Road in Mathare Constituency.

Abdirizak Tohow, who runs a clinic at Hodan Plaza, expressed disappointment at witnessing those tasked with dealing with the garbage menace worsening the problem.

"Instead of collecting, they are contributing to the garbage crisis on one of Eastleigh's busiest roads," said Abdirizak.

In their defence, the Green Army noted that the area served merely as a temporary collection point, insisting they had no intention of creating another garbage hotspot.



Faith Kithinji, the recently appointed Environment Officer for California Ward, acknowledged the regrettable conduct of her team members and promised swift corrective measures.

"We will stop using this part of the road for waste collection. This was wrong," she said.

Faith assumed her role just days ago, she replaced the long-serving official Abdirizaq Ibrahim, who was transferred to Kasarani. Noah Ngeno, the Chief Environment Officer for Kamukunji Sub-county also assured prompt intervention to address the situation.

"This was a mistake, and we are committed to clearing the area of all the garbage by Thursday," said Noah.

A spot check by The Eastleigh Voice established that garbage had been dumped on several sections of Yusuf Haji Road with the dumping majorly done by street families and the Green Army, claiming the spots were just collection points.
