Gor Mahia stretch lead as away teams reign supreme in Saturday's FKFPL matches

By |

Gor Mahia are now marching towards their 21st Kenyan Premier League title

Gor Mahia accelerated their march to a record 21st league title with a resounding 3-1 victory away to Murang'a Seal. Sebastian Park in Murang'a hosted the match.

K'Ogalo were first off the blocks, with Austin Odhiambo giving them the lead in the 10th minute.

The home side found a way back into the game, with John Kiplangat equalising against his former side in the 34th minute.

The two teams maintained parity until halftime, but the league leaders returned from the changing rooms more determined.

Striker Benson Omalla restored Gor Mahia's lead from the penalty spot in the 75th minute before guaranteeing the defending champions victory when he completed his brace in the 92nd minute.

The victory increased Gor Mahia's points tally to 60, stretching their lead over second-placed Kenya Police FC to 12 points. Murang'a Seal remains 11th, with 35 points.

If Gor Mahia's victory was the climax of the day's matches, then it was Bidco United who set the trend for what was to be the feature of Saturday's FKF PL preview: home teams submitting to away teams.

Bidco United won 3-1 away to Muhoroni Youth, condemning the home team to a defeat that saw them slide to 17th with 26 points.

Samuel Ndungu, a former Muhoroni Youth player, became a tormentor when he gave Bidco United the lead in the 9th minute. The away side maintained that advantage until the 84th, when Muhoroni Youth found a way back into the game.

However, Muhoroni Youth's relief was short-lived as Emmanuel Mogaka struck in the 91st and 94th minutes to earn Bidco United a victory that lifts them to 7th on the log with 40 points.

At the Police Sacco Stadium, a 3-0 victory for the Kariobangi Sharks ensured that they traded positions on the standings with their hosts, KCB. Kariobangi Sharks rose to 10th with their points tally increasing to 37, while KCB slid to 12th while remaining with 35 points. The Kariobani Sharks took care of business with red-hot John Makwata's strikes in the 9th and 39th minutes, sandwiching Julius Masaba's 13th-minute goals.

Shabana defeated 2009 league champions Sofapaka 1-0 on the road in the day's other match at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, moving up to 15th place with 28 points, surpassing Batoto Ba Mungu and Muhoroni Youth. Despite having 28 points, Sofapaka's ranking is 16th due to their inferior goal difference. In the 56th minute, Shabana scored the all-important goal through Brian Michira.
