Relief for students as KUCCPS opens portal for first revision of choices

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has initiated the first revision of choices for applicants seeking placement in learning institutions.

Additionally, 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates with C+ and above grades, who didn't apply for degree programs earlier, are eligible to apply now.

"The KUCCPS online application system is now open for the 2024 First Revision of Choices. Log in to students.kuccps.net and apply for available programmes," the placement service noted.

KUCCPS said the portal will close on April 4, 2024.

"Those who submitted applications in February and March 2024 should confirm the status of their applications by logging into the KUCCPS Student’s Portal students.kuccps.net," the placement service said.

Form four leavers from the year 2000 to 2023 with any KCSE mean grade, who haven't enrolled through KUCCPS before, have also been encouraged to apply for TVET courses.

The portal was initially opened for applications on February 8, 2024, and was initially expected to remain open until February 22.

However, challenges with selection and payment prompted KUCCPS to extend the deadline to February 26.

Subsequently, the issues persisted, forcing Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to order another extension until March 4, 2024.

Delays

Parents and students affected by the hitches complained that the application process was majorly affected by the delay in processing payments.

However, Director General of e-Citizen Services Issac Ochieng and KUCCPS CEO Mercy Wahome said they had successfully addressed the payment-related delays.

As of March 1, 2024, 144,102 students (72.2 per cent) out of the 199,695 students who attained a mean grade of C+ and above in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination had applied to their desired Universities, TVET Institutions, Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

Based on the application trends of the 2022 KCSE candidates, the placement service targets to enrol 173,178 (86 per cent) of the students with C+ above for placement this year.

So far, 83 per cent of the targeted students with a mean grade of C+ and above in the 2023 KCSE examination have applied.

Machogu had urged students who scored between grades C and E to take advantage of the ongoing applications and select their desired diplomas, craft certificates or artisan programmes offered in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

“This category of students has the advantage of walking into their preferred Ministry of Education TVET institutions to be assisted with the application process,” Machogu said.
