In a significant move aimed at bolstering the education sector, the government today announced the release of Sh50.93 billion for basic education.

This comprehensive allocation is designed to support various crucial aspects of the educational landscape, fostering a robust environment for learning across the country.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura elaborated on the breakdown of the disbursement, highlighting its strategic nature in ensuring seamless continuity for students at different levels. "The funds address key areas like free primary and junior secondary education, secondary day schools, and the recently implemented university funding model," Mwaura stated.

Prioritizing access and learning

Basic education: Recognizing the foundation of a strong education system, Sh4.74 billion is allocated to basic education, ensuring continued access to quality learning for young minds.

Secondary education: To support the smooth transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and guarantee free junior secondary education, the government is providing Sh7.60 billion in capitation grants for secondary schools.

Examinations and invigilation: Ensuring no student is denied the opportunity to participate in crucial exams, Sh2.8 billion is dedicated to covering examination and invigilation fees for KCSE, KJSE, and national examiners.

Free day secondary education: To ease the financial burden on families and promote access to secondary education, Sh16.20 billion is allocated to settle school fees for students in public day secondary schools.

Equipping the Future Workforce:

Technical and vocational training: Recognizing the importance of practical skills development, Sh1,224.59 million is directed towards technical and vocational training centers, technical training institutions, and national polytechnics to equip youth with employable skills.

Investing in Higher Education:

University student support: Committed to fostering skilled graduates, Sh18,369 million is allotted towards university students' fees and research, including contributions from the Higher Education Loan Board (HELP) and the University Fund Board.

Expanding Reach and Support:

Constituency development funds: To empower local communities and invest in grassroots development, Sh10 billion is disbursed through the National Government Constituency Development Fund.

Affirmative action support: Recognising the need for equitable access to education, Sh1.5 billion is channeled to the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, providing bursaries for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
