Carpenter in court for stealing Sh355,000 at BBS Mall shop

A 20-year-old carpenter who allegedly broke into a shop inside the BBS Mall in Eastleigh, within Kamukunji in Nairobi and stole Sh355,000 is facing charges of burglary and theft.

Enock Kiprotich is charged with burglary contrary to section 304 (2) of the Penal Code where he is accused of breaking into Abdikadir Elmi's shop on May 24, 2024.

Kiprotich is also facing a charge of theft in contravention of section 268 (1) as read with section 275 of the Criminal Procedure Code where he is accused of stealing the Sh355,000 inside the shop.

The accused person is accused of breaking the padlocks to gain entry into the shop at around 2 am.

Elmi, an electronics dealer, had kept the money inside a drawer at the shop before he left. He found both padlocks and the cash missing.

The complainant reported the incident to the BBS Mall management security, and CCTV footage was reviewed. Kiprotich is allegedly captured breaking into the shop.

The matter was reported at the nearby Eastleigh North Police Station.

The BBS Mall management helped trace Kiprotich since he had been working there.

Kiprotich was arrested by officers from the Spring Valley police station who handed him over to their Eastleigh counterparts.

The suspect had worked at Elmi's shop previously with a team of carpenters who were working on fittings at the shop and had left his mobile phone being charged at the shop after withdrawing cash.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Irene Nyanguthii of the Makadara Law Courts.

The suspect was released on a cash bail of Sh130,000. The case will be mentioned on July 24 before the December 12, 2024 hearing.

Security officers at the mall and two police officers are listed as witnesses in the case alongside Elmi.
