Nairobi Expressway warns of week-long traffic disruption

By |

The disruption will be experienced at the Eastern Bypass Entrance due to maintenance works being carried out at the section of the highway.

Motorists planning to use the Nairobi Expressway this week are set to experience traffic disruptions.

Moja Expressway, the company that runs Nairobi Expressway announced that disruption will be experienced at the Eastern Bypass Entrance due to maintenance works being carried out at the section of the highway.

"The Nairobi Expressway is undergoing essential maintenance works at the Eastern Bypass Entrance, K10+900 metres towards town (near Imaara Mall). This will continue for 24 hours every day from today and will be completed within a week, "reads the notice dated May 25, 2024.

As a result, motorists have been advised to plan their journey accordingly to ensure their safety and the well-being of others. They were further advised to drive cautiously around the section undergoing maintenance until around June 1.

"To ensure your safety and comfort, please plan your journey accordingly to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Please drive with caution around the area of maintenance," the notice added.

In the past few weeks, the Sh89 billion Nairobi Expressway has been hit hard by flooding due to the heavy rains witnessed in the country.

Floods damaged sections of the 27.36-kilometre road prompting Moja Expressway to issue traffic disruption alerts as the highway underwent repairs.

The expressway seeks to decongest Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way but has experienced traffic since it was opened to the public in 2022, with over 10 million vehicles accessing it since July 2022. The road has 11 tolling stations, 54 toll plazas, and 54 cameras, with 126 cameras inside the toll plazas.

Moja Expressway monitors the road with recordings being done at 30-minute intervals. A smart monitoring system detects congestion, spillage, vehicle reversals, pedestrian crossing and emergencies.

The dual carriageway has 11 interchanges at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.

The expressway, with 18.2km on the ground and 8.9km elevated, is a class A, four-lane dual carriageway with a design speed of 80km per hour.

The project is one of retired president Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy.
