Nairobi's Eastlands residents to experience water shortages as floods destroy pipeline

Several estates in Nairobi's Eastlands are set to experience dry taps after floods wreaked havoc in the area

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company issued a notice to customers announcing water flow interruption after the water pipeline was swept away by floods.

"We would like to notify our customers that the water pipeline along Outer Ring Road has been swept away at the Ngong River Crossing at Kware," reads the notice.

Affected estates include Tassia, Nyayo Estate, Embakasi Village, Park Estate 1&2, Pipeline and Plot 10 Estates, Embakasi Jua Kali, and the surrounding areas.

Heavy rains have continued to pound Nairobi, leaving a trail of destruction.

On Wednesday morning, several roads were rendered impassable, some estates included a section of Parklands, South C submerged and several businesses were interrupted.

The government on Wednesday announced that 10 people died in the last 24 hours, bringing the national flood-related death toll to 179, consisting of 164 adults and 15 children.

An update from the Kenya Red Cross Society reveals that 36 counties have been affected by the floods, with at least 132 people reported as missing. 38 schools and 13 health facilities have also been affected by the floods.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, 45 roads have been destroyed, 7,813 livestock lost and 371 water sources affected by the floods.

Nairobi County is the worst hit with 147,031 people displaced accounting for over 77 per cent of those displaced countrywide.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said that 16 people in Nairobi had perished due to the floods but assured that his government was addressing the situation.

Also, it was highlighted that out of the households affected by the floods, 13,000 had sought refuge in the camps set up by the county government.

However, he said the number was decreasing. He noted that out of the 31 camps that had been established, only 10, which are situated in Mathare and Ruaraka sub-counties are currently occupied.
