The UN Security Council last night extended the AU Transition Mission (ATMIS) in Somalia until 30 June 2024, through the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2710 under Chapter VII.

The UN Security Council last night extended the AU Transition Mission (ATMIS) in Somalia until 30 June 2024, through the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2710 under Chapter VII. This resolution authorizes African Union-contributing nations to deploy 17,626 soldiers by the year's end and complete the phase two withdrawal of 3,000 ATMIS troops by 31 December 2023.

The Council also has granted authorization for the AU to deploy up to 14,626 troops to Somalia from 1 January 2024, until 30 June 2024, concluding the phase three pullout of 4,000 ATMIS troops by the end of June next year.

A special Somali-led security conference scheduled for December 12 in New York will offer an opportunity to review plans for the ATMIS transition, address the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, and identify Somalia’s security requirements beyond 2024.
