USM Alger penalized in CAF Confederation Cup drama

By |

US Alger barred RS Berkhane from using kits that displaying the Morocco map, which allegedly included disputed territory

What was set to be  fiery showdown in the CAF Confederation Cup  between USM and RS Berkane on 21 April 2024 took an unexpected turn with the game not taking place eventually.

The real drama unfolded off the pitch when RS Berkane discovered a controversial jersey swap awaiting them in the dressing room.

Instead of the attire they intended to use that had a display of the Morocco flag, RS Berkane was met with a new set of kits that did not have the  map, which, as per USM Alger, included a disputed territory. The move was swiftly condemned as a political provocation by the visiting team.

In response, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) wasted no time in taking action. They levied a heavy penalty against USM Alger, declaring a 3-0 victory in favor of RS Berkane by default. Additionally, the case has been escalated to the Disciplinary Board for further investigation, hinting at potential repercussions for USM Alger.

Despite the setback, fans can still anticipate an electrifying rematch between RS Berkane and USM Alger on April 28, 2024.

CAF Sanctions

  1. To Sanction USM Alger with a forfeit of 0-3.
  2. To Submit the case to the Disciplinary Board for possible additional sanctions.
  3. The second leg fixture between RS Berkane and USM Alger at the Berkane Municipal Stadium on 28 April 2024 is maintained.
