KRA demands taxpayers' phone numbers, physical addresses in cleanup

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is conducting a cleanup of its taxpayer's database to enhance service delivery and also curb tax cheats.

Via a notice issued online, KRA notified all registered taxpayers to log in to iTax to verify their details, which enables the authority to verify their tax pins.

"KRA would like to notify all registered taxpayers of the ongoing data cleanup exercise of taxpayer's Personal Identification Number (PIN) registration details," read the statement, which added that taxpayers will be issued with a one-time password (OTP), which will be used to confirm their phone numbers and emails first.

Once a taxpayer logs into iTax, the system will display the mobile number that is registered in iTax, through which an OTP will be sent for validation of contact details.

Other details required by KRA include the physical address of the taxpayer and the registered email address.

If the number is incorrect, the taxpayers will be required to provide a correct number that will be used to send the OTP, which will enable them to access the iTax system.

The body has further encouraged registered taxpayers to update or correct more details appropriately on iTax, including the physical location of businesses, residency status, and directorships, or partnerships held, among others.

For more details on the taxpayer register data cleanup exercise, KRA can be reached in any of their office or any Huduma Centre branch.

KRA is also encouraging Kenyans to grab its Tax Amnesty programme and file their taxes before the deadline on June 30.

So far, KRA confirms that more than four million people have filed for the 2023  tax return, 2 million more compared to 2017 when only two million had filed their returns by the deadline date.
