Singh Restaurant in Mombasa to close after 62 years of operation

By |

"Unfortunately, since the pandemic, we have faced significant increases in costs such as licences, food, drinks, energy bills, rent, and more."

A pillar of culinary tradition in Mombasa, Singh Restaurant, will soon bid farewell to its patrons after 62 years of operation.

Owner Darshan Singh Wilkhu announced that the beloved establishment, renowned for its Punjabi cuisine, will close its doors for the last time on July 9, 2024.

Founded in 1962 by Darshan's father, Dalip Singh Wilkhu, Singh Restaurant has been a cherished spot for locals and tourists alike.

Speaking about the closure, Darshan Singh Wilkhu cited the increasing operational costs as the primary reason behind the decision.

"Over the years, we have had the immense joy of serving millions of customers from around the world, including ministers and celebrities who came to enjoy our traditional home-made dishes," said Darshan Singh Wilkhu in a statement.

He added, "Unfortunately, since the pandemic, we have faced significant increases in costs such as licences, food, drinks, energy bills, rent, and more."

He continued, "I have done everything possible to absorb these expenses so that our customers could continue to enjoy our food at reasonable prices. However, to sustain the business further, we would need to raise prices significantly, which goes against the ethos of Singh Restaurant."

Darshan, who, at 81 years old, has decided to close the restaurant to spend more time with his family, expressed pride in the legacy of Singh Restaurant and optimism about its future.

"My sons, who have grown up with Singh Restaurant as an integral part of their lives, are already discussing ways to bring our beloved dishes to you at the same affordable prices," he said.

Despite the closure, Darshan Singh Wilkhu remains confident that the spirit of Singh Restaurant will live on through future endeavours.

"This is not the end for Singh Restaurant. We hope Singh Restaurant will evolve further, and we will keep you informed about our progress,” he said.
