Ugandan security on high alert as ADF fighters cross border from DRC

The ADF militants are suspected to be planning attacks in various parts popular with civilians, including urban centres, places of worship, schools, and public event locations.

Reports that fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have crossed into Uganda from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have put Ugandan security forces on high alert.

The ADF militants are suspected to be planning attacks in various parts popular with civilians, including urban centres, places of worship, schools, and public event locations.

Deo Akiiki, Uganda's deputy military spokesperson, addressed reporters in the capital city of Kampala, confirming the infiltration of ADF rebels into Uganda just two days ago.

Akiiki emphasised that Ahamed Muhamood Hassan, alias Abu Waqas, a notorious bomb expert born in Tanzania, was leading the group.

"Awareness is crucial at this moment to prevent falling victim to ADF terror," Akiiki cautioned, reiterating concerns about potential attacks in urban areas and key gathering points and emphasising the need for collective awareness and preparedness.

The Ugandan military has intensified its readiness to counter any potential threats posed by the ADF incursion.

Despite previous efforts to uproot the ADF from their Congolese bases through joint operations with the DRC, the group continues to pose a significant security challenge to the region.

The ADF, originally formed in Uganda in the 1990s, emerged as a dissenting faction protesting the government's treatment of Muslims. However, subsequent military actions forced the remnants to seek refuge across the border in the DRC.

President Yoweri Museveni has asserted successes in targeting and eliminating ADF elements, including high-ranking commanders. However, recent incidents, such as attacks on schools and tourist sites, highlight the group's persistent threat.

The ADF was responsible for the deaths of two tourists in a national park, as well as over 40 individuals, primarily students, last year alone.

Efforts to completely eradicate the ADF's presence in the region have yet to yield conclusive results, with sporadic attacks continuing to disrupt civilian life.
