Severe flooding cuts off Mbogolo Bridge along Mombasa-Malindi road

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed that severe flooding has cut off the Mbogolo Bridge along the Mtwapa-Kilifi (A7) Road.

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed that severe flooding has cut off the Mbogolo Bridge along the Mtwapa-Kilifi (A7) Road. KeNHA is advising drivers to use an alternative route via the Mombasa-Mazeras-Kaloleni-Mavueni-Kilifi Road. The heavy floods have swept away a section of the Mbogolo Bridge, disrupting transportation between Malindi and Mombasa counties.

Residents in the vicinity of the bridge are facing significant losses as their belongings were carried away by the river's waters. Juma Chengo, the Member of County Assembly for Mnarani ward, accused the road repair contractor of obstructing the waterways, exacerbating the situation.

"I received a call at around 3 am this morning about this problem. I came here and found out that the road had been cut off. The channel is very narrow, and as the water is fighting to cross, it has eroded all the soil," Chengo noted.

This predicament has greatly affected motorists, especially matatu drivers who are now without passengers due to the disrupted route. In addition to this, floods have caused damage to a section of the Thika Garossa highway at Tula in Tana River County, completely wiping away a section that had been partially damaged before, leading to significant transportation disturbances.

Deputy President William Ruto announced that the government will convene a cabinet meeting on Monday to finalise a comprehensive plan of action to address the flood crisis. He assured that a response mechanism has been activated to aid those affected by floods nationwide.
